April 1904

Milton, Milton Twp., Rock County, Wisconsin

28
Word has been received here of the death, at his home in Kearney, Neb., of Mr.
Thomas William STEER. He was born in Plymouth, Cornwall, England, Feb. 20, 1833, and was a few days past 71 years of age when his death occurred, March 14, 1904. He came to Canada when but a child, and about 1868 to the States, coming to Milton about 1870, where he became well known to the people of the village and vicinity of that time. Here two daughters, their mother having died some years before, found homes in Milton families, Elizabeth in the home of President WHITFORD, and Margaret (Mrs. E. D. BLISS) in that of M. Wells CRUMB. After a residence of a few years in Milton, Mr. STEER moved to North Loup, Neb., and thence to Kearney, where he died, as above noted. One son, James Henry STEER, residing at Cozad, Neb., the two daughters mentioned, and a second wife survive him. [Thursday edition, p. 1]

Hannah S. JENKINS, wife of Lucius GARTHWAITE, was born in Scotch Plains,
Union county, N.J., July 2, 1835, and died at Milton Jct., April 26, 1904, in the 69th year of her age. She made a profession of faith in Christ when 10 years old, in the ordinance of baptism and united with the Seventh-day Baptist church of New Market, N.J., and in the year 1857 with a letter from that church she joined the church at Rock River. In later years she became a member of the Milton Junction Seventh-day Baptist church continuing her membership there until death. She was married to Lucius GARTHWAITE Dec. 13, 1856, at Rock River. Unto them were born seven children, 3 sons and four daughters. Two of these died in infancy. A husband and five children are left to mourn their loss. The children are Samuel, of Stoughton, William of Ft. Atkinson, Mrs. William TANNER of Edgerton, Mrs. Elmer BARNES of Milton, and Mrs. Nettie HURD of Milton Junction. The latter lived with Mrs. GARTHWAITE at the time of her death. There are also twelve grandchildren. Mrs. GARTHWAITE has spent the greater part of the last forty-seven years in Milton. The text (Psalm 103:1) and the hymns to be sung at the funeral were chosen by her. The funeral is to be held at the M. E. church in Milton Junction Saturday, April 30, at 10:30 o'clock.
