19 years. The deceased was a member of Company E, of the 38th Iowa Regiment of Volunteers. He took part in the siege of Vicksburg, but was soon laid up with erysipelas in his feet. He went with his regiment to New Orleans, where he obtained a furlough, and came home. His disease soon ran into consumption, which terminated his life. A short time before his death, he enlisted under the banner of the cross, and died in the triumphs of faith, shouting victory as he went. [Vol. 20, No. 3, p. 11]
