- Chester J[ob] SMITLEY, a resident
and merchant of Milton, Wis., since 1945, was
- born at Berne, Ind., June 27, 1915.
His life, before coming to Milton, was spent in Indiana where
he was educated in the public schools and went into business
as a grocery store owner and operator.
- On April 4, 1942, Mr. SMITLEY
was married to Margaret LOWTHER, daughter
- of Mr. and Mrs. Norton LOWTHER,
of Milton, Wis. In June of 1945 the SMITLEYs moved to Milton,
Wis., where Mr. SMITLEY purchased and operated a grocery
store. Despite the severe handicap of poor health, Chester exercised
ambition and initiative in his business and community relations.
His death, on November 16, 1948, following surgery, was mourned
by a host of friends.
- Chester SMITLEY was a sincere
Christian. He was a member of the Brethren
- Church in his native state. Since coming
to Milton, he was active in attendance and work, as health permitted,
with his wife in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church.
- Surviving him are his wife and two
daughters, Carolyn Jane and Mary Ellen, his
- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. SMITLEY;
his grandmother, Mrs. W. N. SMITLEY; and nine brothers
and sisters.
- Farewell services were conducted on
Thursday, November 18, at the Milton Seventh
- Day Baptist Church, by Rev. Elmo Fitz
Randolph, pastor. Interment was in the Milton Cemetery. E. F.
