- Ezra CRANDALL was born in Brookfield,
New York, on June 8, 1820. By the
- time he was twenty-four he had by diligent
application, acquired a liberal education, having among other
studies completed a special course at Alfred (New York) University.
Thus equipped for a life of usefulness, Mr. CRANDALL
was married in 1844 to Miss Mary SMITH, of Avoca, N.Y.
Of the union, three children were born: L. Estelle, in 1846;
Helen Elvine, now the wife of W. W. CLARKE, of Milton,
and Dr. C. Eugene, at present a member of the faculty of the
University of Chicago. The first mentioned child died in New
York in 1897, and the mother passed away on February 18, 1888.
- In 1869, Mr. CRANDALL and his
family came to Milton, where he became
- interested in real estate. When the
Bank of Milton was organized some time after his arrival he was
elected president and held the position until deafness caused
him to resign. For twenty years he was a member of the board
of trustees of Milton College, in which he took a decided interest,
donating liberally at various times toward the maintenance of
the institution from the wealth he had acquired. He held a
number of responsible positions in the Seventh-day Baptist church,
and this, too, received his financial aid. In 1889, he was
again married to Mrs. E. P. BABCOCK, who survives him.
- Mr. CRANDALL by his long residence
and correctness of his daily life has been
- most influential in the educational,
social and business affairs of Milton.
- By his death the family loses one dear
to them, the college a staunch friend, the church
- a firm believer and the vicinity a
most honored citizen. [Thursday edition]
